...A New CCHS Book:
WATERWAYS OF CAMDEN COUNTY
A Historical Gazetteer by William R. Farr

From its earliest days, Camden County, N.J., was a landscape defined and shaped by its waterways. The Camden County Historical Society has published the first comprehensive overview of the documented history of more than 250 waterway names. It is illustrated with images (above, left) from the collection of Camden County Historian Paul W. Schopp. See mail-in order form below.

The Camden County Historical Society's newest publication, Waterways of Camden County, is a meticulously documented account of the streams, lakes and ponds in and bordering on Camden County. The author of the work, William R. Farr, has produced a one-of-a-kind gazetteer of the many waterway place-names that exist today, as well as those that have not survived the many years of industrial and residential development.

Mr. Farr has spent the better part of 40 years investigating the names of waterways and their locations for his

The Author
William R. Farr, who in 1985 retired from the practice of law after 50 years, is a long-time historian who has been tracking down the documents of Camden County place names since 1964. He is the author of Place Names In And Around Haddonfield. A former partner in the Bellmawr law firm of Farr Reifsteck & Wolf, he has had a long association with the Barrington, Gloucester County, Burlington County and Camden County historical societies.

Additional Detail
Hardcover, 224 pages, illustrated with vintage photos, in-depth bibliography, comprehensive index, publication date: December, 2002.

224-page hard-bound book, using deeds and wills recorded in both Camden and Gloucester County and countless maps and surveys housed in libraries and historical societies throughout southern New Jersey. Waterways of Camden County is the first of three publications documenting Mr. Farr's passion for local history; he has almost completed the second publication, focusing on the watermills of Camden County.

250 place-names
This newly-published volume arranges over 250 waterway place-names in a logical fashion, explores their history and lists the many aliases of the county's waterways. Most county municipalities have waterways twisting through their boundaries or, in fact, have their boundaries fixed along rivers or small streams. Even Camden County's legal limits are bound by waterways -- Delaware River, Pennsauken Creek, and Big Timber Creek. These important bodies of water, as well as their numerous feeder streams and branches, are examined in Waterways of Camden County from an historic viewpoint. Similarly, in the lower part of the county, where the watershed of Little Egg Harbor and Mullica Rivers forms amidst more feeder streams and branches than anywhere else in the county, Farr has created order from a labyrinth of waterway names and locations.

In bygone years, dams were built across many waterways to form ponds used to furnish water-power for grist and saw mills. Pillings Lake (Clementon), Hopkins Pond (Haddonfield) and Grenloch Lake (Gloucester Township) are just a few of many mill-ponds researched and included in the publication. Well over a century ago, entrepreneurs sold spring water to health-conscious consumers. This volume places the location of several such springs, including Kalium Springs (Collingswood) and Sloan's Mineral Springs (Camden), and provides background fixing their place in history.

Vanished waterways
The publication also looks at waterways that have disappeared from the modern-day landscape, such as Cuthbert Lake (Haddon Township), Dennis Creek (Audubon), Dirt Bridge Branch (Cherry Hill) and Kennel Gut (Gloucester City). Farr's study also reveals the whereabouts of oddly-named waterways such as Champaign Springs (Oaklyn), Cuffy's Run (Voorhees,), Hopperfoot Branch (Waterford), Kettle Run (Berlin Township), Rattlesnake Run (Pennsauken) and Salter's Ditch (Waterford).

This publication includes something for everyone. Local historians and researchers will find Farr's thorough research , analysis, and detailed citation of sources very helpful. Naturalists and environmentalists should find the book useful in understanding the county's system of rivers and streams.

Genealogists
Genealogists, too, will find hundreds of family names included in the book. Finally, anyone with an interest in or connection to Camden County's landscape will uncover names, locations, histories and citations presented in a fashion that, prior to publication of Waterways of Camden County, had not existed.

Waterways of Camden County is now available through the Camden County Historical Society. Priced at $20.00 (including shipping and handling), the book may be ordered with the mail-in form below.
