DOCENTS SOUGHT BY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Learn and Explain Colonial Life to Visitors
CAMDEN, NJ -- The Camden County Historical Society seeks volunteers to work as docents in Pomona Hall, the authentically-restored 18th-century mansion that was once home to Camden's Cooper family.

Pomona Hall, located behind Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and next to Harleigh Cemetery, is like a bit of Colonial Williamsburg within walking distance of the center of Collingswood. It offers many interesting opportunities for volunteer docents.

Tour guides
Docents serve as tour guides for the many school groups and adults who visit the Society, pointing out and explaining everything from the beehive oven in the open-hearth kitchen to the ear trumpet found in the dowager's bedroom of Pomona Hall.
According to Sandy Levins, the Society's Programming Director, "a lot of our volunteers who work as docents have an interest in antiques and period furnishings as well as a real love of history. The docent experience is particularly well-suited for anyone who wants to learn how life was lived day to day in colonial times."
On-site training
The Society provides on-site training for all volunteers. Docents will hear about the history of Pomona Hall as well as that of the Cooper family and learn the fine points of colonial home furnishings from a Society board member who specializes in 18th-century antiques and furniture. And an experienced hearth cook will describe how long-forgotten kitchen implements such as a go-devil, cast-iron spider and kick-toe toaster were all used in Pomona Hall's oversized open-hearth kitchen.
